Why should I Varnish my art work?
GOLDEN Varnishes offer several advantages to artists concerned about the longevity of their artwork. First, they are removable. Problems such as smoke damage, handling blemishes and dust or dirt accumulation on the surface of the painting can be removed along with the varnish. Second, GOLDEN Varnishes offer protection from UltraViolet (UV) rays generated from the sun. This protection extends the life of any painting, but is specially important when using extremely fugitive products such as dyes, papers and certain inks. Thirdly, varnishing consolidates the artwork with an even sheen. Gloss Varnishes can intensify colors while Matte or Satin Varnishes soften the color and minimize glare.
Which GOLDEN Varnish should I use?
Each Painting needs to be assessed on an individual basis. GOLDEN Polymer Varnish is appropriate for indoor application on acrylic paintings. GOLDEN MSA Varnish can be used on Oil, Acrylic s and many other types of paints. Always test your varnish applications beforehand. MSA Varnish is also ideal for coating interior and outdoor murals as it offers excellent UV protection, a tighter film and water resistance.
What is an isolation coat? Why is it necessary?
An isolation coat separates the painting from the varnish by sealing absorbent areas and adding a protective acrylic layer. A layer of Soft Gel (GLoss) mixed 2:1 with water can provide an isolation coat. The isolation coat protects color from lifting during varnish removal and allows a more even application of varnish. When using Satin or Matte Varnishes, it prevents frosting or whitening when vanishing paintings with varying degree of surface absorbency.
Are Varnish intermixable to create the sheen I need?
GOLDEN offers three sheen: Gloss, SAtin, and Matte. Each can be blended to create a custom sheen. Mix the different varnishes to desired sheen before thinning. Test the sheen by applying your mixture over a prepared panel with varying swatches of dark paint. When dry, compare to unvarnished sample. NOTE: Do not mix GOLDEN Polymer Varnishes and MSA Varnishes together.
What causes an uneven coating or irregular appearance in spray application?
Irregular appearance can be the result of several issues, including: improper shaking of can prior to or during use, not maintaining proper distance from substrate, incorrect angle of spray, overlay heavy single coating, windy conditions, improper product or room temperature or insufficient drying time between coats.
