FAQ...

Why are there so many Gels?
Gels are essentially thickened acrylic resins or the binder in acrylic paints. An artist can manipulate their paint it achieve desired qualities by using a variety of gels. If you feel that your paint is not thick or stiff enough, try adding one of the Heavy or Extra Heavy Gels. If you want a smoother touch, add Soft Gel. If you find your paint film too glossy, add a Matte Gel. Experiment to find what is right for you.

Can you use Gels by themselves or just mixed with paints?
The binder for paints is the same binder for Gels, only modified to be thicker or thinner, so you can mix any Gel and any paint in endless variation without worry. Artists can use Gels to create unique texture in paintings or to create a smooth surface.

It is easier to mix Heavy Body Paint with a Heavy Gel GOLDEN Fluid Color, although the viscosity, can be used to tint any Gel. If you only want to change the sheen of a particular paint, use the Gel that is closest in viscosity. For instance, if you want to make Heavy Body Quinacridone Crimson more matte, mix it with Regular Gel (Matte). This will keep the paint the same consistency and alter the sheen.

What's the difference between GOLDEN Gels and Mediums?
Both are considered "mediums". They are all binders without pigments. Gels offer a wide variety of thickness, transparency and opacity. Mediums are usually thinner and more pourable. CLear Tar Gel and Soft Gels are pourable but offer distinctly unique properties.

How do I know which Gel is right one for me?
An artist first needs to determine which characteristics they are looking to change, and which ones should remain. What thickness is most desired? Do you want textures, such as brush strokes, or do you want to create a film that is completely level? Do you want an opaque or transparent film? Is overall sheen important? As you go through these issues, it is easy to eliminate many of the choices. We always suggest tests and experiments before doing final applications on a support.

Why are Gels so milky when they are wet? Do they clear up?
Gels are formulated with acrylic resins that are naturally milky in the wet state. They dry up completely clear, however, Matte Gels contain matting agents with white silicate particles. If you have waited 2 weeks for the acrylic film to cure, it may be the matting agents that are causing the "milky" or "foggy" appearance. If clarity is important, use Gloss Gel and finish you artwork with a matte varnish.

Types of Gels & Molding Paste

Soft Gel Gloss

Soft Gel Semi-Gloss

Soft Gel Matte

SOFT GEL has a creamy consistency. When mixed with a small amount of color it will produce a rich brilliant glaze. Its smooth bodied consistency enables movement and placement of collage materials and it is not as "wet" as Matte Medium, so it causes less curl to paper collage pieces. Creates soft rolled edges of paint strokes in contrast to a heavier gel. Creates beautiful velvety texture when painting into with soft brush.

Regular Gel Gloss

Regular Gel Semi-Gloss

Regular Gel Matte

REGULAR GEL
are creamy like Heavy Body Acrylic colors and are ideal for extending paint and regulating transparency without changing the consistency of the Heavy Body colors. useful for impasto glazing effects.

Heavy Gel Gloss

Heavy Gel Semi-Gloss

Heavy Gel Matte

HEAVY GEL
are thicker than Heavy Body Acrylic colors and may be blended with colors to increase body. Excellent for holding peaks and dry translucent.

Extra Heavy Gel Gloss

Extra Heavy Semi-Gloss

Heavy Gel Matte

EXTRA HEAVY GEL
along with High Solid Gels are thickest GOLDEN gels and create thicker textures than Heavy Gels. Excellent for holding peaks and dry translucent.

High Solid Gel Gloss

High Solid Gel Matte

HIGH SOLID GEL
are really stiff and thick. Wonderful for palette knife effects and major impasto looks. Shrinks less than all the other gels. The matte High Solid Gel creates a very waxy look. Holds every sharp deep Scrafitto incisions when carved into while wet.

Clear Tar Gel

CLEAR TAR GEL
have a very long stringy rheology, which means it will pour in long narrow drips without breaking. Mix a bit of color with it and "draw" as it drips off the end of a palette knife. Makes flat shinny or "oily" like surface when laid out with a palette knife. Very 'pully' to paint with. Create some wild marble effects by dropping color onto a layer of wet Clear Tar and using combs to "marble" or you can paint directly into the wet surface.

Molding Paste

Hard Molding Paste

MOLDING PASTE is made with white marble dust, it dries to a hard opaque white surface. It can be used for texturing and palette knifed out, it resembles a fresco surface. Used as a ground to paint on., the hardness will keep paint sitting on the surface and is totally non-absorbent.

HARD MOLDING PASTE provides the hardest opaque, matte finish. It blends well with Golden Acrylic colors. Hard Molding Paste is useful for creating tough, durable finishes. Self-leveling for smooth hard surfaces or rounded peaks. The dried film can be carved with hand or power tools.

Light Molding Paste

Hard Molding Paste

LIGHT MOLDING PASTE offers dramatic weight reduction in thick texture. Its unique whiteness creates extraordinary qualities when mixed with color. A "space age" microscopic air bubble replaces the marble dust in regular Molding Paste making it 50% lighter. This material gives the Light Molding paste a "fluffy" consistency or whipped cream. When dry, it has an oddly absorbent quality that allows for some beautiful rich saturated washes of color.

EXTRA HEAVY GEL / MOLDING PASTE A blend of Extra Heavy Gel and Molding Paste, dries to a satin, semi-opaque finish. Blends well with colors. Excellent for increasing viscosity and building surfaces.

Pumice Gel Fine

Pumice Gel Coarse

Pumice Gel Extra Coarse

PUMICE GELS have three grades of gritty texture, Fine, Coarse, and Extra Coarse. Fine Pumice Gel dries to a finely textured because the particles a very small, imparting a velvety quality to the paint. Useful for creating grounds for Pastels, Oil Pastels and Paint Sticks. Coarse and Extra Coarse Pumice Gel create coarse granular concrete-like texture. Add color to any Pumice Gel or wash fluid glazes onto the grainy texture and you can create almost "sparkly" looks/ Great textures for use of dry-brush techniques.
