Gamsol is 100% pure odorless mineral spirits (OMS); a safe, clean solvent for oil painting. Strong enough to thin oil colors and Gamblin alkyd resin mediums, Gamsol cannot dissolve dammar or other natural resins and will cloud dammar varnish if used as an extender.
Gamsol can be reused until the solvent will no longer "clear". After painting, pour dirty solvent into can #1. Let the solvent settle, then pour off the clear solvent into can #2. Repeat. Add another settling can if needed.
MEDIUM COHESION, SLOW DRY
The oldest form of painting medium is made from a mixture of Solvent and a drying oil, such as Poppy Oil or Linseed Oil.
*Adding a drying oil makes paint feel more slippery and easy to brush.
*A medium containing more oil than a medium containing more solvent makes oil colors look more glossier.
*A medium containing more solvent makes oil colors look more matte.
*NOTE: Solvent is not a binder so it should be used carefully.
HIGH COHESION, SLOW DRY
Mix 50% Oil to 50% Solvent to create thin illusionary surfaces with no brush marks. Stand Oil mixed with solvent makes a similar high viscosity painting medium that is also slow drying.
*High viscosity creates an enamel-like surface. A high viscosity medium has high sheen and high cohesive force that levels its surface. Adding a high viscosity medium makes a mixture thicker with a definite sticky feeling.
*NOTE: Mix all painting mediums thoroughly by shaking before using, especially those that contain only oil and solvent.
